Silverstone Sugo SG09 as a gaming and Plex PC

3

There was an opportunity to start a new PC project based on some spare parts I had just doing nothing. I already have a well configured Windows 7 PC I use for editing photos, editing HD videos and gaming. My second PC acts as a file server for archiving purposes; it does have a decent AMD CPU and a 560Ti GPU but it doesn’t really see much action other than when I need to backup my commercial photos. My third PC is just something I built just for fun but it didn’t see much use other than playing a few games in the spare room so I wanted to give it more purpose by moving it into the living room to serve my 46″ TV. I also wanted a small mobile case so I could transport it to LAN events or hide discretely within my living room.

The case it was in was a cheap no brand case that merely served a purpose but it was too big for my sparse living room so I needed something much smaller and discreet. The motherboard is a Micro-ATX format board, it’s not as small as mini-itx but I didn’t want to buy any new components so the new case had to accommodate that. After extensive research I came across Silverstone’s Sugo SG09 priced around £90 new in the UK. Because I didn’t want to spend that much on a case I waited until it popped up on Ebay for £50! A bargain I thought and snapped it up.

As soon as it arrived I pulled apart the old PC case and set about putting all the components into the Sugo SG09. I had read a few reviews saying it was a tight squeeze when it comes to cable management and they were right! After a bit of trial and error I just cabled up the back with plastic ties  but it still leaves a bulge when you put the case on. I had to put some of the cables underneath the PSU by literally shoving it in there. All this cabling is right next to a 120mm on the side.

One thing I didn’t like was the 120mm fan on the left side panel as I felt it served no real purpose; other than the cables I shoved in there, there was no component that needed cooling so I removed it. The rest of the build was very easy like any other case.

The internal specifications are as follows:

  • M4A87TD/USB3
  • 8gb Ram
  • MSI GTX570 GPU
  • Crucial 120gb SSD

I overclock the GTX 570 to 850mhz which produces quite a bit of heat so this was a real test for the SUGO SG09 to see if it really could exhaust the heat properly and to my amazement it handled it fine!

I’m sorry if this doesn’t seem very scientific, I just wanted to share my experience with this wonderful little case. I can totally recommend it to anyone who has a Micro-ATX motherboard. I am going to EPICLAN 10 in a months time, and this little case is perfect for taken to LAN events!

I have used it several times to watch videos using PLEX and played several games of Battlefield 3 without any issues at all!

Baby video taken with Canon 5D Mark 2

2

A good friend recently gave birth to a boy called Noah. So naturally I wanted to take a few photos. Surprisingly I took the Canon 5D Mark 2 with me and not my trusty Nikon D3. The reason? Because I still believe the Canon 5D MK2 is still the best all round camera (if you include the video feature). I believe I can take better images with my Nikon D3, however it doesn’t have the video feature that I so crave. Since having access to the 5D I’ve used every opportunity I can to take photos AND video.

Anyway, enough technical stuff. I hope you like this little video I created using the 5D. I shoot in full HD at 24fps (60fps blows). It was edited on an iMac 24″ using Final Cut Pro 6. Oops, sorry. That was a bit more techno-babble!

All the videos I take is just for fun. I enjoy it, but I obviously don’t do it professionally…yet. I’m still learning.

Please FACEBOOK LIKE at the bottom. Only if you like it of course :-)

External microphone for Canon 5D Mark 2, Rode Videomic

2

Because I intend to record alot of audio with the HD video from the Canon 5D Mk 2, the built in microphone within the camera is insufficient for my needs. Fortunately Canon have the foresight to include an external microphone jack which means any 3.5mm jack mic can be plugged into to improve the audio.

I’ve gone for the Rode Videomic. I’ve only just purchased it today from Amazon so i wont’ be able to do tests just yet but keep your “ears” open for an upcoming post with video/audio examples.

Update, I’ve just posted a very short video showing some of the subtle differences of the VideoMic.

However, futher exploration of YouTube has revealed slightly longer audio tests using various settings on the Rode VideoMic. See what you think from this chap. Personally, I think the LOW PASS filter setting is more pleasant. I’m not entirely sure what it does though. If you do, then please leave a comment.

Canon 5D Mark 2 Video test with my kitten Toffee

I’ve been given a Canon 5D mark 2 to play with and I could not think of anything more interesting than my cat. The lens is a 24-105mm F4 L series. I hope you enjoy!

Why I believe Canon SLR video smacks Nikon’s arse!

0

Yes, once more I’m back on my Canon Vs Nikon video SLR rant again.

Canon have recently released their budget SLR aim at the amateur. I can’t vouch for the photography quality as I think they pretty much trounce Nikon at the lower end anyway, however their video is far superior to anything Nikon have released!! I would even say the 550D video quality is as good as (if not better) than the Nikon D3s video quality!

Take a look at his promotion video released by Canon. It’s amazing!!! Nikon are just not catching up at all! I love my D3, but I want a D3 that can also do high quality HD video! Is that too much to ask???

My faith in Nikon is ebbing away each month as Canon continues to show the old dog how it’s done.  For now, I’m a professional photographer and I will stand by Nikon, but I am very tempted to go to the other side. I don’t know how much longer I can stand it.

A great little video. I won’t spoil it, but it’s great to watch!

You’re Beautiful by Phil Wickham. An excellent cover version.

I’m a Christian and I’m proud of it. Just one of the many benefits are the awesome worship songs out there. You’re Beautiful by Phil Wickham happens to be one of my favourites. I was curious to see what others were doing with that song so I looked up a few on YouTube and found this guy Cory who’s from Oklahoma.

Not only does he remain true to the spirit of the song, but he’s also recorded it properly using proper recording equipment so the sound is much better than a tinny camcorder microphone. Anyway, click the video, have a listen and enjoy!

You can view Cory’s MySpace here

I see Your face in every sunrise
The colors of the morning are inside Your eyes
The world awakens in the light of the day
I look up to the sky and say
You’re beautiful

I see Your power in the moonlit night
Where planets are in motion and galaxies are bright
We are amazed in the light of the stars
It’s all proclaiming who You are
You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful

I see you there hanging on a tree
You bled and then you died and then you rose again for me
Now you are sitting on Your heavenly throne
Soon we will be coming home
You’re beautiful, you’re beautiful

When we arrive at eternity’s shore
Where death is just a memory and tears are no more
We’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring
Your bride will come together and we’ll sing
You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful

I see Your face, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful
I see Your face, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful
I see Your face, I see Your face
I see Your face, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful

My very first Music Video. Decisions by Lost Minute

0

With some help from a friend, a Canon HV30 camcorder, two very bright lights and some editing in Final Cut Pro I directed, produced and cut this video together. Let me know what you think!

Lost Minute, a little video I made.

0

Lost Minute is a local band which I have only recently been aware of. Their debut single ‘Decisions’ is a song I enjoyed immediately. During their intimate gig yesterday in Aylesbury I brought along a Video Camcorder as well as my Nikon. I took it into Final Cut Pro, added a couple of filters and edited it together. Although I didn’t have much footage to work with (which I was aware of at the time) I was pleased with the slow motion effects I used. The hardest part was finding a setting that looked on Youtube and Facebook; there was a bit of trial and error with Compressor during that process.

I love my photography, but for as long as I remember I have been fascinated by the art of cinematrography. I really enjoyed the editing process and hope there will be more opportunities to come.
